Dr. Chad Lakey

Veterinarian

Tell us about your career from when you graduated college up to this point.

After graduating from vet school, I worked as an associate DVM in Clemmons, NC for seven years, gaining extensive medical and surgical experience in a busy practice. In 2016, I had the opportunity to purchase Midway Animal Clinic from Dr. Haynes, who was retiring.

What veterinary school(s) did you attend?

I attended NC State University, where I earned a BS in Animal Science (2001–2004) and my Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree (2005–2009).

Why did you choose this profession?

I’ve always had a passion for helping animals and people. I’ve had pets my entire life and felt a special connection with them early on. I knew from a young age that I wanted to become a veterinarian and never really considered any other career path.

What is your favorite part of your job or your favorite things about veterinary care?

I especially love surgery, particularly soft tissue surgery. There are so many opportunities to treat and prevent disease through surgical procedures, and I enjoy continuously learning new skills and techniques. Being able to offer more advanced surgeries is something that really sets our clinic apart from most general practices—we can provide these services at a lower cost than a 24-hour or specialty hospital, which helps us serve more clients.

I also love a good challenge when it comes to difficult medical cases, whether it’s ordering the right tests or exploring different treatment options. It keeps things interesting and rewarding.

Would you like to highlight any of your work with specific institutions or hospitals?

We work closely with our local 24-hour/specialty hospital, which allows us to handle more complex surgeries and cases that might otherwise be cost-prohibitive at a referral facility.

What are your personal hobbies and interests?

I enjoy spending time with my family and golfing whenever I get the chance.

Would you like to highlight any particular interests or areas of focus?

Yes, I have a particular interest in Cushing’s disease—one of our own dogs was diagnosed with it, so it’s a condition close to my heart. I’m also passionate about allergy management, especially chronic ear and skin infections and those frustrating cases of feet-licking, which we see so often in practice.

Are you a member of any industry organizations?

I’m a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association.
